ECHR JUDGMENT ON BULK INTERCEPTION OF COMMUNICATIONS

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) handed down its judgment in the case of Big Brother Watch and Others v. the United Kingdom on 13 September 2018. The ECtHR found that some aspects of the UK surveillance regimes violated the Convention. The case concerned a number of complaints made by journalists and NGOs about bulk interception of communications, intelligence sharing with foreign governments and obtaining communications data from communications service providers. In the judgment the ECtHR declared inadmissible the applicants’ complaint regarding the independence and impartiality of the Tribunal.
